Greece enters a new phase in AI: from strategy to implementation

At the KPMG AI Conference, Dr Vangelis Karkaletsis discussed how governance, data, and infrastructure can turn national ambition into tangible results.

Earlier this month, Dr Vangelis Karkaletsis joined a high-level panel at the KPMG Greece AI Conference, where the discussion focused on Greece’s transition from AI strategy to implementation through national and European initiatives such as Pharos and Daedalus.

Reflecting on the discussions at the KPMG Greece AI Conference earlier this month, one theme stood out: Greece is now entering a new phase in Artificial Intelligence, moving from strategy to implementation.

Together with Vasilis Karkatzounis, Michalis Kassimiotis and Yannis Mastrogeorgiou, under the moderation of Theodossis Tompras, Dr Karkaletsis explored how governance, data, and infrastructure can turn national ambition into practical outcomes.

In his remarks, he highlighted how this transition is already unfolding through concrete national and European initiatives:

  • The Pharos AI Factory, operating alongside the Daedalus supercomputer, is creating the foundation for an AI ecosystem that connects research, infrastructure, and industry.
  • The Blueprint for Greece’s AI Transformation, developed by the national AI Advisory Committee, outlines a path that links ethics, innovation, and competitiveness.
  • Through collaborations such as Generative AI Greece 2030, co-developed with EKKE (National Centre for Social Research) and the Special Secretariat for Foresight of the Hellenic Republic, Greece is aligning foresight with action.

“Europe’s real test now,” Dr Karkaletsis noted, “is to turn regulatory leadership into technological capability, to make trustworthy AI not only a principle, but a competitive advantage.”

As he emphasized, researchers, policymakers, and citizens share the same task: to build an AI ecosystem that empowers people, strengthens the economy, and reflects the values we want technology to serve.
