Vangelis Karkaletsis

Director and Chairman of the Board of the NCSR “Demokritos”. Representative of Greece to the European AI Board. Member of High Level Advisory Committee on AI to the Greek Prime Minister. Member of the National Commission for Bioethics & Technoethics.

Previously Director of the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications (IIT) at NCSR “Demokritos”, Member of the National Council for Research and Innovation (ESETEK) and Head of the Software & Knowledge Engineering Lab (SKEL The AI Lab) at IIT. Coordinator, scientific and technical manager of many European and national projects and organiser of numerous scientific international conferences, workshops and summer schools. Responsible for the Institute’s educational activities for more than 10 years, initiated the joint PhD scholarship programme with several Universities abroad, launched the new MSc in Data Science and MSc in Artificial Intelligence programmes for NCSR “Demokritos”, and set up the new educational programme for primary and secondary schools. Research interests are in the areas of Artificial Intelligence, content analysis, big data management, knowledge representation, human-machine interaction.

Dr. Vangelis Karkaletsis
Director and Chairman of the Board, NCSR “Demokritos”

I am a graduate of the Department of Computer Engineering & Informatics, University of Patras (1989), with an MSc in Artificial Intelligence from Queen Mary & Westfield College, University of London (1990) and a PhD in knowledge representation and information extraction from the Informatics & Telecommunications Department, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1995).

I got a post-doc scholarship at NCSR “Demokritos” (1997-99), and elected as Researcher for the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications (IIT) of NCSR “Demokritos” in 1999, Senior Researcher in 2003, and Research Director in 2007.
